Data Center Electrician

High-voltage power systems and the people who keep them flowing.

Pay range

$70,000 – $130,000+

Entry path

IBEW apprenticeship (4–5 years) or equivalent journey-level experience

About the role

Data center electricians are journey-level commercial electricians specialized in mission-critical power: medium-voltage switchgear, parallel UPS systems, generator paralleling, ATS coordination, and bus duct distribution. Pay scales sit at the top of the commercial trade because mistakes are expensive and the work demands precision. In strong-union metros (Chicago, Seattle, NoVA) experienced data center electricians clear $100k–$130k+.

What you do

  • Install, maintain, and repair medium- and low-voltage distribution systems
  • Service UPS modules, batteries, and rectifier systems
  • Commission new generators, switchgear, and ATSs
  • Perform infrared scans and preventive maintenance on busways and breakers
  • Coordinate with project managers and engineers on new-build energization

Certifications and credentials

  • State journeyman or master electrician license
  • IBEW apprenticeship card
  • NFPA 70E (arc flash) certification
  • Manufacturer-specific certs (Schneider, Eaton, Caterpillar, Vertiv)

Best fit for

  • Recent IBEW apprenticeship graduates choosing a specialization
  • Commercial electricians wanting a higher-paying niche
  • Trade-school grads with an electrical concentration
